Low blood oxygen, or hypoxemia, can occur due to conditions that disrupt your lungs’ ability to take in oxygen or your heart’s ability to pump blood. Hypoxia, where essential tissues become oxygen-deprived, can develop if blood oxygen levels drop too low.

For emergency situations, a non-rebreather mask may be used to maintain normal blood oxygen levels after traumatic injury, smoke inhalation, or carbon monoxide poisoning.
