Laryngeal Mask AM

Description

Laryngeal mask airways (LMA) are supraglottic airway devices that can be either single-use or reusable. They are primarily used to maintain an open airway during anesthesia administration or as a life-saving measure in situations where the airway is difficult or has failed. The difficult airway algorithm, which is published by many anesthesiology societies worldwide, recommends the use of LMAs in such cases.

Although LMAs were initially used mainly in the operating room, they are now commonly used in the emergency department, intensive care unit, and field settings. They are easier to use and more effective than a bag-valve-mask in the hands of basic life support providers, and advanced life support providers may also use them as an alternative to intubation. Additionally, some LMA models can serve as a conduit for endotracheal intubation.
