Description
Endotracheal intubation is a crucial medical procedure used to manage a patient’s breathing. It involves the insertion of a tube into the trachea (windpipe) through the mouth or nose. In most emergency situations, intubation is usually carried out via the mouth.
Whether the patient is conscious or not, medication is administered to make the procedure comfortable and more manageable. Sometimes, they may also receive relaxation medication. During the procedure, the healthcare provider uses a laryngoscope to view the vocal cords and the upper part of the windpipe. This is done to ensure correct tube placement.
If the intubation is carried out to help with breathing, the tube is inserted past the vocal cords and into the trachea, stopping just above the point where it divides into the lungs. A mechanical ventilator can then be connected to the tube to help the patient breathe. This procedure is crucial in emergency medicine, intensive care units, and other settings where managing a patient’s breathing is a priority.
